How Much Does Custom Software Cost?

Quick answer

Custom software has no single price. Clutch's pricing guide, updated Sep 21, 2026, puts the average reviewed software development project at $132,480 over about 13 months, while the most common project band is $10,000 to $49,999 and most listed firms bill $25 to $49 an hour. Your price is hours times rate: scope decides the hours, the team's location and seniority decide the rate. Below: the market numbers, an hours-times-rate table, what pushes hours up, and how long our own 44 builds took.

Key takeaways

  • Clutch's software development pricing guide (updated Sep 21, 2026, built from verified client reviews) reports an average project cost of $132,480, an average monthly spend of $10,209 and a usual timeline of about 13 months.
  • The same guide says most reviewed projects fall between $10,000 and $49,999 and most listed firms charge $25 to $49 an hour. The average sits far above the typical band because a smaller number of large projects pull it up.
  • A quote is hours times rate. 1,500 hours costs $37,500 to $73,500 at $25 to $49 an hour and $150,000 to $223,500 at $100 to $149 an hour, so the team's location can move the price more than the feature list.
  • Hours rise with user roles, integrations, payments, compliance, data migration and the number of platforms (web, iOS, Android). Every one of those is a scoping decision you control.
  • Our own 44 published builds went live in 5 to 10 weeks, with a median of 7 weeks. Our app and web app builds typically cost $7,000 to around $25,000 to $30,000, depending on features, and we work project-based or hourly; each build is scoped and quoted in writing after a free call.

What does custom software cost in 2026?

The most current public market data comes from Clutch, which compiles prices from first-party reviews submitted by verified clients.

Two things in that data matter for a buyer. First, the average is more than double the top of the typical band. That happens when most projects are modest and a smaller number of large ones pull the mean up, so the “average” describes no one in particular. Second, Clutch’s own page states the hourly range two ways ($24 to $49 in its key findings, $25 to $49 elsewhere). Treat all of these as ranges, not quotes.

How do hours and rates turn into a price?

Every quote, fixed price or not, is built from estimated hours multiplied by a rate. The table below runs that arithmetic at three Clutch rate bands. The hour counts are illustrative sizes, not our estimates for any product.

Estimated hours At $25 to $49 / hr At $50 to $99 / hr At $100 to $149 / hr
500 (a focused tool or first version) $12,500 to $24,500 $25,000 to $49,500 $50,000 to $74,500
1,500 (a multi-role product with integrations) $37,500 to $73,500 $75,000 to $148,500 $150,000 to $223,500
4,000 (a platform with several apps and heavy compliance) $100,000 to $196,000 $200,000 to $396,000 $400,000 to $596,000

Rate bands from Clutch’s software development pricing guide, updated Sep 21, 2026, checked Oct 31, 2026, which lists India, the Philippines, Ukraine and Mexico at $25 to $49, the US, Poland and Spain at $50 to $99, and Canada and Australia at $100 to $149. Hours are illustrative.

The same 1,500 hours can cost $37,500 or $223,500. That is why two quotes for “the same app” can differ by six times without either vendor being unreasonable. Before comparing quotes, ask each vendor for the hours by phase (discovery, design, build, QA, launch) and the rate behind them.

What pushes the hours up?

Hours grow with the number of distinct things the software has to do correctly. These are the drivers we see most often when scoping:

Driver Why it adds hours
User roles Each role (customer, staff, admin, partner) needs its own screens, permissions and tests
Integrations Every outside system (CRM, ERP, payment, booking, airline or lender APIs) adds mapping, error handling and test cases
Payments Deposits, refunds, payouts and invoices each need their own flows and edge cases
Compliance HIPAA, PCI or audit trails add access controls, logging and review
Data migration Moving years of records from spreadsheets or an old system means cleaning and mapping first
Platforms A web app plus native iOS and Android apps can mean two or three front ends instead of one
Reporting Dashboards that management actually trusts need clean data models underneath

Our own builds show the spread. The Jetstarix charter aviation site, a focused front end with a rebuilt quote flow, went live in 5 weeks. The Spirit Airlines group booking system, with a Sabre fare integration, a rules-based pricing engine, a three-tier approval chain and deposit-and-balance payments, took 10 weeks. Same team, very different scope.

How long does custom software take to build?

Clutch’s reviewed projects ran about 13 months, which includes long, phased engagements and ongoing work. Our own 44 published builds each shipped a defined first version, and they went live in 5 to 10 weeks:

Time matters to cost because most of what you pay for is people’s time. A shorter first version is the most reliable way to spend less: ship the core workflow, measure it, then pay for the next feature with evidence. That is the logic behind MVP development.

Is it cheaper to hire an in-house developer?

Not for a single project, usually. The BLS reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for US software developers in May 2025, which is about $65 an hour across a 2,080-hour year before benefits, payroll taxes, recruiting and equipment. One developer also rarely covers design, back end, front end, QA and DevOps alone. In-house makes sense when the software is a permanent product that needs a team every week. An outside team makes sense for a defined build, or to get a first version live before you hire.

What does custom software cost after launch?

The build is the first cost, not the last one. Plan for:

  • Hosting and infrastructure, which scale with users and data.
  • Usage-billed services such as email sending, SMS, maps, AI models and payment processing.
  • Maintenance: security patches, dependency and operating-system updates, and fixing what real users find.
  • New features, which most products need within months of launch.

Ask every vendor what post-launch support includes, how it is billed and how quickly they respond. Our software maintenance and support page lists what that work covers.

When is custom software the wrong choice?

When an off-the-shelf tool already does most of the job. If a CRM, a scheduling tool or a project board covers 80% of the workflow, configuring and connecting it is faster and costs less than building. Custom software earns its cost when the workflow is how you compete, when your team spends hours a week on workarounds, or when per-seat fees grow faster than a build plus upkeep would.

How do we price custom software?

Our app and web app builds typically cost $7,000 to around $25,000 to $30,000, depending on features, and we work project-based or hourly. Each build is scoped on a free 30-minute call and quoted in writing with the scope, milestones and timeline. Our 16-person in-house engineering team, plus 30+ specialists who work with us remotely, has delivered 200+ software projects, and every one of the 44 builds in our portfolio lists how long it took.

FAQs

How much does custom software cost?

Clutch's pricing guide, updated Sep 21, 2026 and based on verified client reviews, reports an average software development project cost of $132,480 over about 13 months. It also says most reviewed projects fall between $10,000 and $49,999. The spread is that wide because scope varies that much, so the useful number is your own: estimated hours times the team's hourly rate.

How much does custom software cost per hour?

Clutch says most software development companies listed on its site charge $25 to $49 an hour (updated Sep 21, 2026). By country, its guide lists India, the Philippines, Ukraine and Mexico at $25 to $49, Poland and Spain at $50 to $99, and Canada and Australia at $100 to $149. For in-house comparison, the BLS reports a median wage of $135,980 a year for US software developers in May 2025.

How long does it take to build custom software?

Clutch's reviewed projects ran about 13 months on average, which includes long, phased engagements. Our own 44 published builds each went live in 5 to 10 weeks, with a median of 7 weeks, because each one shipped a defined first version and added features after launch.

Why do custom software quotes vary so much?

Two vendors are rarely pricing the same thing. One quote may include discovery, design, QA, deployment and post-launch fixes while another covers only coding. Rates also differ by four to six times between regions. Ask every vendor for hours by phase and the rate behind them, then compare like for like.

Is custom software worth it compared with off-the-shelf software?

It is when a subscription product forces your team into workarounds that cost more time than the build would, when the workflow is how you compete, or when per-seat fees grow faster than a one-time build plus upkeep. If an existing SaaS tool covers most of the job, configuring it is usually the faster and lower-cost route.

What does custom software cost after launch?

Plan for hosting, third-party services such as email, maps or payments that bill by use, monitoring, security updates and new features. These are ongoing line items, not one-time costs, so ask each vendor what support after launch includes and how it is billed before you sign.
