How Much Does App Maintenance Cost?
Quick answer
App maintenance cost is the store fees, hosting and third-party services plus the hours needed for fixes, OS updates and store deadlines. The fixed part is small: Apple's $99 a year, and hosting that can start on a free tier. The hours are the real cost, and they depend on platforms, integrations and how critical the app is.
Key takeaways
- Maintenance has fixed costs (store fees, hosting, services) and labor (fixes, OS updates, store deadlines, small improvements). Labor is almost always the bigger part.
- Fixed store costs are small: Apple's Developer Program is $99 a year. Google Play's $25 is paid once.
- Every year brings mandatory work: since Apr 28, 2026 Apple requires Xcode 26 for uploads, and since Aug 31, 2026 Google Play requires updates to target Android 16 (API level 36). Existing apps must target API 35 to stay available to new users on newer Android versions.
- Labor math with market rates: at Clutch's typical $25 to $49 an hour for app companies, 10 hours a month is $250 to $490 and 20 hours is $500 to $980.
- Many vendor blogs quote 15% to 20% of the build cost per year. We found no primary dataset behind that rule, so estimate from the actual app instead.
App maintenance costs the store fees, hosting and third-party services the app runs on, plus the developer hours for fixes, OS updates and the yearly store deadlines. The fixed part is small: Apple’s Developer Program is $99 a year, and hosting can start on a free tier. The hours are the real cost, and they depend on how many platforms, integrations and changes your app has.
Checked on October 31, 2026. Store fees and deadlines come from Apple’s and Google’s own pages, hosting quotas from Firebase’s pricing page, and labor rates from Clutch’s app development pricing guide and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. What do you pay for when you maintain an app?
| Cost | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Developer Program | $99 a year | Apps stop being available for download if the membership expires |
| Google Play account | $0 a year | The $25 fee is one-time |
| Hosting and database | From $0 on free tiers, then usage-based | Grows with users, reads, storage and bandwidth |
| Paid services | Usage-based | Email, SMS, maps, payments, AI calls, error monitoring |
| Developer hours | The largest line | Fixes, OS updates, store deadlines, small improvements |

Why does an app need maintenance if nothing is broken?
Because the platforms move under it every year, whether you change the app or not. The 2026 deadlines alone:
| Date | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 31, 2026 | Apple: answer the updated age rating questions for each app to avoid interruptions when submitting updates | Apple |
| Apr 28, 2026 | Apple: apps uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with Xcode 26 or later using the iOS 26 SDK | Apple |
| Aug 31, 2026 | Google Play: new apps and updates must target Android 16 (API level 36); existing apps must target API 35 to stay available to new users on newer Android versions | |
| Sep 9, 2026 | Apple: iOS and iPadOS apps must target iOS 13 or later | Apple |
| Nov 1, 2026 | Google Play: last date of the extension developers could request for the API 36 requirement |
All checked Oct 31, 2026.
Google spells out the cost of falling behind: apps targeting API level 34 or lower are only available on devices running that Android version or lower. In plain terms, new users on new phones stop finding your app. Each of these deadlines means upgrading tools, frameworks and libraries, testing, and resubmitting.
Other work arrives without a deadline: crash reports, a payment provider changing its API, a security patch for a library, or the CRM your app syncs with changing a field.
How many hours does app maintenance take?
It depends on what the app does. These drivers move it most:
| Driver | Fewer hours | More hours |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | One cross-platform app | Two native apps plus a web app |
| Integrations | None or one | Payments, CRM, maps, AI, older systems |
| Dependencies | Current framework versions, tests in place | Old versions, no tests |
| Criticality | Internal tool, business hours | Customer-facing or safety-critical, fast response |
| Change volume | Fixes only | New small features each month |
| Data | General business data | Health, payment or personal data with audit needs |
What does that come to in dollars?
Illustrative arithmetic using market rates, not our prices. Clutch’s app development pricing guide lists $25 to $49 an hour as typical for app development companies on its site (Clutch, updated Sep 21, 2026, checked Oct 31, 2026).
| Monthly hours | At $25 an hour | At $49 an hour | Per year (at $25 to $49) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 (fixes only, simple app) | $125 | $245 | $1,500 to $2,940 |
| 10 (fixes plus OS updates) | $250 | $490 | $3,000 to $5,880 |
| 20 (plus small features) | $500 | $980 | $6,000 to $11,760 |
| 40 (active product) | $1,000 | $1,960 | $12,000 to $23,520 |
Add $99 a year for Apple and your hosting and service bills. For an in-house comparison, the BLS lists the May 2025 median wage for software developers, QA analysts and testers at $64.44 an hour, or $134,040 a year, before benefits (BLS, checked Oct 31, 2026).
Is maintenance really 15% to 20% of the build cost?
That figure shows up on many vendor blogs. We could not find a primary dataset behind it, and Clutch’s app pricing guide gives no maintenance percentage. It also breaks down at the edges: a two-screen internal tool may need a few hours a year, while a marketplace with payouts, a CRM sync and two native apps may need a part-time engineer. Estimate from the drivers above instead of from the original invoice.
How do you keep maintenance costs down?
- Build fewer codebases. One cross-platform app is one set of upgrades. See native vs cross-platform.
- Keep dependencies current. Small regular upgrades cost less than a big one after two missed years.
- Add crash and error monitoring from launch, so bugs are found before reviews mention them.
- Write tests for the core flows (sign-up, payment, the main job), so OS updates can be checked quickly.
- Use free tiers sensibly. A backend-as-a-service can keep hosting near zero for a small app; see do I need a backend.
- Own your accounts. Store, hosting and repository access in your name means any developer can pick up the work.
Who maintains an app after launch?
Usually the team that built it, an in-house developer, or a maintenance partner. Whoever it is, agree on response times for critical bugs, who watches the store deadlines, and how small changes are priced.
Our software maintenance and support service covers fixes, OS and store updates, monitoring and small features, and we quote it in writing after reviewing the app. If you are still planning, how much it costs to build an app and App Store costs cover the other two parts of the total.
