Papri: a publishing and reading app built for Bengali writers

Papri is a community publishing platform where Bengali authors and poets share their work with readers. We built it in 6 weeks with full Bengali typography, serialised fiction and audio recitation. Today 4,200 authors have published 78,000 works to 310,000 readers across Bangladesh, India and the diaspora.

The challenge

Bengali writers had no accessible digital home for their work. Without one, their poems and stories got little visibility and readers had no reliable way to find them, which held back the wider literary community.

More than two hundred million people speak Bengali, yet digital publishing barely serves them. Writers posted poems in Facebook groups, where they vanished from view within a week, or shared PDFs over WhatsApp.

The script itself was the bigger obstacle, and most tools never took it seriously. General platforms broke conjunct characters, offered clumsy input, returned poor search results and rendered type that simply looked wrong. Authors were forced into visual compromises by software that was never designed with them in mind.

Papri's founder is a writer who had watched strong work get lost in group threads for years. She did not ask us for a translated copy of an existing platform. She wanted a product designed around the script and around how this community reads, including serialised fiction and its long tradition of reciting poetry aloud.

What we built

We designed and built a community publishing platform where writers post their literature and readers discover regional storytelling through structured discovery.

The typography work came first and took the largest share of the build, because correct rendering of Bengali script is what everything else depends on.

Correct Bengali typography

Conjunct characters render properly, using a font set picked for reading on screen.

Native input on any keyboard

Writers type Bengali on desktop and mobile keyboards without switching to another app.

Serials with chapter scheduling

Authors publish poetry, short fiction and long-form serials, and can schedule chapters, which is how many readers follow stories.

Search that understands Bengali

Bengali text is indexed properly, and transliterated queries typed in Latin characters still find the right work.

Audio recitation and reader support

Recordings attach to written pieces, honouring the recitation tradition, and readers can support authors directly.

Structured discovery and offline reading

Collections, curated anthologies and a follow model organise discovery, and offline reading covers patchy connectivity.

The result

Authors trusted Papri because of the typography. Writers who had learned to live with broken rendering saw the difference straight away.

Direct reader support now gives a small group of authors something close to a real income, in a language that had almost no digital literary economy. Audio recitation was added late in the scope and is now one of the most used features.

Questions about this bengali literature publishing and reading platform build

How long does it take to build a Bengali publishing and reading app?

Our team built Papri in 6 weeks. That covered full Bengali typography and input, publishing for poetry, short fiction and serialised novels, Bengali-aware search, audio recitation, reader support and offline reading. The typography work took the largest share of the build, because correct script rendering is what made authors trust the platform.

Why do general publishing platforms struggle with Bengali script?

On the platforms Papri's authors had used, conjunct characters broke when rendered, input methods were awkward, search did not work properly and typography looked wrong. For Papri we built correct conjunct rendering, a font set chosen for on-screen reading, an input method for desktop and mobile keyboards, and search that also matches transliterated queries.

Can authors earn money on a literature app like Papri?

Yes. Papri lets readers support authors directly. Among the 4,200 authors publishing on the platform, the top hundred generate meaningful supplementary income this way. That matters in a language where almost no digital literary economy existed before, and it gives writers a reason to publish their work on Papri rather than in social media groups.
