GoHighLevel Phone Number Setup in LC Phone: Buy, Port, Route
GoHighLevel phone number setup in LC Phone has four jobs: get the number (buy a new one at Settings, Phone System, or port yours), register it for texting (A2P 10DLC for local numbers, Toll-Free Verification for toll-free), set call routing and voicemail with a 20 second timeout, and turn on a recording disclosure where needed.
Part of the guide: GoHighLevel setup guide
Key takeaways
- To buy a number in an LC Phone sub-account: Settings > Phone System > Phone numbers tab > + Add Number > Add Phone Number, choose country, filter, select, Proceed to Buy (HighLevel article modified September 18, 2026).
- Buying a number does not enable texting. US local numbers need A2P 10DLC registration for business texts, and toll-free numbers need Toll-Free Verification for texts to US or Canadian recipients. Voice calling is not affected by toll-free verification status.
- Porting is done in Phone System > Phone Numbers > Add Number > Port-in Numbers, and only Agency Owners and Agency Admins can submit it. HighLevel gives about 2 to 4 weeks for under 50 numbers. Keep the old service active until the port completes.
- Incoming call timeout of about 20 seconds is HighLevel's recommended value. Too high and calls fall to carrier voicemail and are logged as Completed instead of Voicemail.
- Call recording can play a disclosure message in the number's configuration. Whether you need one depends on the states of the people on the call, which our recording FAQ covers.
How do I buy a phone number in GoHighLevel’s LC Phone?
In an LC Phone sub-account, go to Settings > Phone System, open the Phone numbers tab, click + Add Number, select Add Phone Number, choose the country, filter, pick a number and click Proceed to Buy. That is HighLevel’s current path (article modified September 18, 2026). This is step 2 of the setup guide, done early because registration takes longer than buying.
What to know before you click:
- Filters narrow results by digits, voice, SMS, MMS, and local or toll-free type. Inventory changes, so if the number you want is gone, use Refresh Results or broaden the filter.
- Identity verification. HighLevel says Persona identity verification is required for eligible +1 numbers (US, Canada, Puerto Rico) if the sub-account has not completed it. It is generally one-time.
- Regulatory bundles. Some countries and number types need an Address Bundle or Regulatory Bundle before provisioning.
- Cost. Numbers carry a recurring monthly rental that varies by country and type. HighLevel’s article gives no amounts and points to its Phone System Pricing and Billing Guide, so check that for current rates.
- LC Phone only. These steps apply to LC Phone-managed sub-accounts. For a connected Twilio account you buy the number in Twilio; see using your own Twilio account. For what the LC branding actually is, see what is LeadConnector.
Should I choose a local or toll-free number?
Choose local for familiarity and lower cost, toll-free when texting throughput matters or the business is national. HighLevel says toll-free numbers cost more than local numbers and have higher messaging throughput: 3 message segments per second versus 1 for other 10DLC numbers.
| Local (10-digit) | Toll-free | |
|---|---|---|
| Texting registration | A2P 10DLC (brand and campaign) | Toll-Free Verification |
| Registration while pending | Texting generally waits for approval | In the US and Canada, some messages can send while pending, per HighLevel |
| Throughput | 1 segment per second (HighLevel) | 3 segments per second (HighLevel) |
| Voice | Not affected by messaging registration | Voice calling is not affected by verification status |
| Cost | Lower rental | Higher rental |
Registration is separate from the purchase for both. “SMS/MMS capability doesn’t mean messaging can start immediately,” in HighLevel’s wording. Our A2P approval timing page explains the waits, A2P rejection fixes cover failures, and the toll-free question is answered separately. Both flows sit in the compliance pillar.
How do I port my existing number into LC Phone?
Port through Phone System > Phone Numbers > Add Number > Port-in Numbers. HighLevel’s in-app flow (article modified October 6, 2026) is available to Agency Owners and Agency Admins only, and it must be enabled through Labs. Sub-account users cannot submit port-in requests. Our porting FAQ goes into the process; the essentials:
- Gather the current carrier account number, the numbers (landline and wireless are entered separately), a wireless PIN or last four SSN digits where required, the authorized representative’s name and email, the full service address and a billing statement (PDF or image, 10 MB or less).
- Complete the Agreement Checklist, enter the details, upload the statement and submit.
- Save the Request SID from the confirmation.
- The authorized person signs the auto-generated letter of authorization (LOA) sent by email.
- Track status in Phone System > Phone Numbers > Port-In Numbers.
Timelines: about 2 to 4 weeks for fewer than 50 numbers after documents are submitted; about 6 to 8 weeks for larger or more complex ports. Rejected requests cannot be edited: fix the cause, delete the request and resubmit. HighLevel lists these common causes: mismatched service address, wrong account number, invalid wireless PIN, unsigned LOA, a suspended carrier account and invalid billing documents.
The warning that matters: keep the numbers active with the current carrier until the port is fully completed. After it completes, test calling, then complete A2P 10DLC (local) or Toll-Free Verification (toll-free) before texting.
How do I set up call routing, ring order and voicemail?
Open Settings > Phone Numbers > Phone Numbers tab, click the three-dot menu next to the number and choose Edit Configuration (HighLevel article modified September 10, 2026). Some accounts show the same area under Settings > Phone System, so follow your screen.
| Tab or setting | What you configure |
|---|---|
| Basic Details | Friendly name, Calls Go To (primary team member), ring options (Web App, Mobile App, phone number, VoIP deskphone), call recording |
| Call Forwarding | Destination: IVR, Team Member, External Phone Number or Voice AI; ring up to 6 additional team members |
| Incoming Call Timeout | How long the call rings before the backup. HighLevel recommends about 20 seconds |
| Backup Behavior | Voice AI or CRM Voicemail |
Only one destination rings at a time on the Call Forwarding tab, in this order: IVR, Team Member (1st priority), External Phone Number (2nd), Voice AI (3rd). HighLevel’s overall evaluation order is a workflow, IVR or automation attached to the number; a user assigned directly to the number; a user assigned to the contact record; Ring-All; then the forwarding number. The highest available priority wins.
Timeout symptoms and causes:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Calls go to the owner’s carrier voicemail; CRM shows “Completed” | Timeout set too high | Set about 20 seconds, backup to Voicemail |
| Phones barely ring before voicemail | Timeout set too low (HighLevel warns below about 15 seconds) | Raise toward 20 seconds |
| Anonymous callers never connect | Private calls not allowed | Sub-account Settings > Phone System > Voice > Other Settings > Inbound Calls > Allow private calls |
| Nobody gets the call | Assigned user has no active device, or permission missing | Check ring options and the user’s role; see user roles |
After changing anything, call the number from a mobile phone and let it ring out once. Test it, do not assume.
Not verified: HighLevel’s configuration article does not cover whisper messages, caller ID or detailed voicemail greeting setup, and I did not find a dedicated official greeting article today. Look in the user’s profile and the number’s configuration, and check the current help center before relying on a menu path from an older tutorial. Callers who see “Spam Likely” is a carrier reputation issue; see why GoHighLevel calls show spam likely.
What do I need to do about call recording notices?
Enable recording and the disclosure in the number’s Edit Configuration > Basic Details: you can turn Call Recording on or off and choose to play a recording disclosure message. The setting is technical. The obligation is legal: federal law allows one-party consent, while a group of states require every party to consent, so a disclosure at the start of the call is the safe default for callers across states. Read whether it is legal to record calls in GoHighLevel and the compliance pillar before turning it on for a multi-state business. This is general information, not legal advice.
What is the right order for phone setup?
- Decide local or toll-free (and whether you port).
- Start the port or buy the number in week 1.
- Start A2P 10DLC or Toll-Free Verification the same day.
- Configure routing and voicemail while the registration runs.
- Test calls. Test texts only after approval.
The full sequence sits in the 30-day setup checklist. If you would rather have the phone, registration and routing built and tested for you, see the GoHighLevel setup agency page.
