How Do I Export a monday.com Board to Excel?
Quick answer
Open the board's three-dot menu, choose More actions, then Export board to Excel, and click Export. One board exports up to 100,000 items, only the table view is included, and updates and subitems are optional extras. Admins can export the whole account as a zip from Administration.

Key takeaways
- Board export, checked October 17, 2026: three-dot menu > More actions > Export board to Excel > Export. A board can export up to 100,000 items at a time.
- Only the table view exports (the main table or a saved filter). Active filters apply, so only matching items are exported. Other board views, group by, sort and conditional coloring are not.
- Updates go on a separate tab if you tick them. Subitems can be included, but subitem updates are not exported, and the Auto Number column is not supported.
- An admin can export the whole account from Administration > General > Account > Export account data. It is a zip with all boards and files, takes up to 24 hours, and can be run once every 24 hours.
- monday.com does not document how formula and mirror columns appear in the Excel file. Test one board first. The API returns both as text through display_value.
- The account export leaves out archived boards, workdocs, dashboards and the monday CRM Emails & Activities timeline.
To export a monday.com board to Excel, open the board, click the three-dot menu in the top right, choose More actions, then Export board to Excel, and click Export. The file downloads at once. One export can hold up to 100,000 items. Only the table view is exported, and you choose whether to add updates and subitems.
Checked on October 17, 2026. We opened monday.com’s help articles on exporting to Excel, exporting the entire account’s data, dashboards, subitems, the Activity Log, account permissions, and security and privacy, plus the API reference pages on rate limits, items_page, formula columns and mirror columns. Where monday.com does not say how something behaves, we say “not documented”.
How do I export a monday.com board to Excel?
These are the steps from monday.com’s “Export from monday to Excel” article (last modified October 8, 2026).
- Open the board.
- Click the three-dot menu at the top right of the board.
- Click More actions.
- Click Export board to Excel.
- In the window that appears, choose whether to export just the table or also include updates and subitems. You can also tick the option to email yourself a copy.
- Click Export. The Excel file downloads immediately.
To export a subset instead:
| What | How |
|---|---|
| One group | Three-dot menu to the left of the group name > Export to Excel |
| Selected items | Select the items with Batch Actions, then click Export in the Batch Actions toolbar. You are asked about updates and subitems |
| One person’s items | Filter the board by the People or Owner column first, then export. Only matching items come out. Save the filter if you will reuse it |
How to confirm it worked: open the file and compare the row count with the item count on the board. If you ticked updates, check that a second tab exists.
What is and isn’t included when you export a monday.com board?
Less than the board shows on screen. The article states that it is “only possible to export the table views of a board”, that you cannot customize how a board is exported, and that group by, sort and conditional coloring are not supported.
| Board element | In the Excel file? | Source and note |
|---|---|---|
| Main table or a saved filter | Yes | Active quick and advanced filters apply, so only matching items export |
| Other board views (Kanban, Gantt, Calendar and so on) | No | “Board views will not be exported” |
| Group by, sort, conditional coloring | No | Listed as not supported |
| Updates and replies | Optional | Go on a separate tab when you tick the option |
| Subitems | Optional | You choose in the export window. Multi-level subitems export with their hierarchy, per monday.com’s subitems article |
| Updates on subitems | No | Only the parent item’s updates are exported |
| Auto Number column | No | “not supported when exporting to Excel” |
| Files and attachments | Not documented for board export | The account export (below) does include uploaded files |
| Formula column | Not documented | See the next section |
| Mirror column | Not documented | See the next section |
| “Powered by monday.com” line | Always added | monday.com says it cannot be removed |
| Dashboards | Not as a whole | Only some widgets export (below) |

What happens to formula and mirror columns?
monday.com’s export article does not say, so we cannot tell you how they appear in the file. We could not find a help article that documents it either. Community forum threads on the topic came up in search, but those pages did not load for us today, so we have not relied on them.
Test it on a copy of the board before you depend on the export. Then:
- Export a small filtered selection that includes one formula column and one mirror column.
- Open the file and check whether the cells hold a single value or a list of values.
- If the mirror cell holds a list and you need one number, add a formula column that references it, test that, and export again.
The API gives a clearer picture. monday.com’s reference says a formula column’s result comes back in display_value while text returns an empty string and value returns null. A mirror column’s display_value is “the mirrored content as a comma-separated text string”. So if an export script reads the wrong field, formula and mirror columns look empty. Our monday formula builder helps you write the replacement formula.
Can I export a dashboard to Excel?
Not the whole dashboard. monday.com says it is not an option to export an entire dashboard to Excel, but the Timeline and Table widgets export through the widget’s three-dot menu > Export to Excel. The List View widget has an Export button in its top right corner. Chart widgets export as image or other file types, and a whole dashboard exports as PDF.
Can I export notes, comments and emails?
Updates (the notes and replies on items) export as described above, on a separate tab. Two related exports are narrower:
- Activity Log: click the Excel icon at the top right of the Activity Log tab. It shows column value changes only, so item creation, deletion and movement do not appear.
- monday CRM Emails & Activities: the account data export does not support this timeline. We found no documented way to export it to Excel. Pull message history from Gmail or Outlook, or read it through the API.
How do I export all my account data from monday.com?
An account admin can download everything as one zip. Steps from monday.com’s “How to export your entire account’s data” article (last modified October 13, 2026):
- Click your profile picture and select Administration.
- Click the General tab in the left panel, then the Account tab.
- Scroll to the bottom to the Export account data section.
- Optionally tick the box to leave out attached files, which speeds the export up.
- Click Export.
- Wait for the email, then click Download here.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who can do it | The account admin |
| What you get | A zip with all boards, including private and shareable boards, and uploaded files. monday.com’s security FAQ describes it as Excel sheets plus uploaded files |
| How long | Up to 24 hours on larger accounts |
| How often | Once every 24 hours. All admins are notified each time |
| Download link | Valid for 24 hours from when the email arrives. After that, run the export again |
| Not included | Archived boards, workdocs, dashboards (their data comes from the exported boards) and the Emails & Activities timeline |

Before you run it, export workdocs as PDF, unarchive any archived board you still need, and note that dashboards have to be rebuilt or saved separately. If you are exporting because you are leaving, read how to cancel your monday.com subscription first, since the plan end date sets your last safe export day.
Is there an automatic backup for monday.com?
monday.com points to a partner app. Rewind backs up the whole account automatically, with daily backups, on-demand backups and restore of single items or the full account. It is a separate app from the marketplace. We did not check its price. A manual export does not restore anything back into monday.com, which is the reason a backup tool exists.
Can I export monday.com data with the API?
Yes, and it is the route for very large or repeated exports. Our monday CRM API integration guide covers authentication. For exports, monday.com’s reference gives these constraints:
- Paging:
items_pagereturns active items only, with a default of 25 and a maximum of 500 items per request. You page through large boards with a cursor, because you cannot query a whole large board in one call. - Daily call limit (resets at midnight UTC): 1,000 on Free, Basic and Standard, 10,000 on Pro, 25,000 on Enterprise.
- Minute limit: 5,000 queries per minute on Enterprise, 2,500 on Pro, 1,000 on other plans.
- Formula values: the
display_valuefield is limited to 10,000 formula values per minute (each cell counts as one) and up to five formula columns per request. - Archived or deleted items:
items_pagedoes not return them. Read them by ID through the rootitemsquery with thestateargument, up to 100 IDs per request.
A 50,000-item board at 500 items per page is 100 calls before you count retries, so plan against your daily limit. Our API rate limits compared research shows how this compares with other CRMs, and how many API calls monday.com allows per day explains what counts toward the limit.
Why is my monday.com export not working?
monday.com publishes no error text for failed exports, so the table below pairs what you will see with the limits and rules in its documentation. Rows marked general are ordinary troubleshooting, not monday.com settings.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No Export board to Excel option, or it is greyed out | On Enterprise, an admin can switch on an account permission that stops non-admins exporting | Ask an admin to export or change the permission (Enterprise only) |
| Large board will not export | More than 100,000 items | Filter the board into batches, or use the API |
| File has fewer rows than the board | An active filter is applied | Clear the filter or note which saved filter you exported |
| Kanban, Gantt or chart layout is missing | Only the table view exports | Export the table and rebuild the view in Excel |
| Sorting or colors are missing | Group by, sort and conditional coloring are unsupported | Re-sort in Excel |
| Subitem comments missing | Only parent item updates export | Copy subitem updates by hand or use the API |
| Auto Number column missing | Not supported in the export | Add a number column in Excel, or copy the values first |
| Formula or mirror cells look wrong | Not documented | Test a copy, add a formula column referencing the mirror, or read display_value through the API |
| Account export has not arrived | Large accounts take up to 24 hours | Wait. Check spam. Run it again only after 24 hours |
| Download link has expired | The link is valid for 24 hours | Run the export again |
| Archived boards or workdocs not in the zip | Not supported by the account export | Unarchive boards. Export workdocs as PDF |
| Excel will not open the file, or the download fails | Browser or network (general) | Try another browser, then ask for the email copy |
When to get help: if the export is incomplete after you have checked this table, send monday.com support the board link, the time you exported and what is missing. They say they are available 24/7.
How do I export to CSV instead of Excel?
monday.com’s board export article describes Excel only. For CSV, open the exported file in Excel and use Save As, choosing a CSV format. Delete the “Powered by monday.com” line and any second tab first if the CSV is headed to another system. Saving as CSV keeps one tab only, so exports with updates need the updates tab saved separately.
How do I import the file back into monday.com?
Use the importer, not a board duplicate. The limits and steps are in how to import a CSV or Excel file into monday.com: 10 MB per file, up to 8,000 rows for a new board and 10,000 for an existing one, with duplicate handling on existing boards. Run your file through the CRM import file checker before upload to catch date, email and header problems. If you are moving data to a different CRM, the CRM migration guide and the CRM import limits comparison cover what each destination accepts.
When to bring in help
A single board export needs no help. Bring someone in when the export feeds a migration, a recurring report or a backup process, because linked boards, mirror columns and subitem hierarchies rarely survive a flat file untouched. Our monday.com service page describes that work, and you can book a 30-minute call to scope it. The wider picture is in the monday CRM guide.
