Can You Send Cold Emails With GoHighLevel? What the Rules Allow and What to Use Instead

Quick answer

Not safely from LC Email. HighLevel's terms require you to have every legally required consent before contacting anyone, and LC Email suspends sending at a 5% bounce rate, which unverified cold lists hit fast. The workable setup is a dedicated cold email tool on a separate domain, with replies and interested leads synced into GoHighLevel.

Key takeaways

  • HighLevel's terms say you must have all consent the law requires before contacting anyone, and that you alone are responsible for what you send.
  • LC Email warns at a 3% bounce rate and suspends sending for 12 hours at 5%. A third strike is a permanent suspension until Support lifts it.
  • Since August 13, 2026, locks only start after 500 sends and 25 bounces, but a cold list with 10% dead addresses still crosses 5% on the first campaign.
  • Gmail requires bulk senders to keep spam complaints below 0.3% and to have SPF, DKIM, DMARC and one-click unsubscribe.
  • Run cold outreach from a dedicated tool on a separate domain, and sync replies and interested leads into GoHighLevel, where nurture and booking happen with consent.

Not safely, and not from LC Email. GoHighLevel will let you import contacts and send to them, but two rules make it the wrong tool for cold outreach. HighLevel’s terms of service say you must have all consent the law requires before contacting anyone, and that you alone are responsible for what you send. And LC Email’s bounce suspension rules stop sending at a 5% bounce rate, a level an unverified cold list can reach in one campaign. The setup that works is a dedicated cold email tool on a separate domain, with replies synced into GoHighLevel.

What happens if you send cold email from LC Email?

LC Email watches your bounce rate and escalates. From HighLevel’s bounce suspension article:

Bounce rate What happens
Under 3% Healthy range
3% Warning email
5% Sending suspended for 12 hours (first block)
5% again Suspended for another 12 hours (second block)
5% a third time Permanent suspension until HighLevel Support lifts it

Only outbound email stops; the rest of the account keeps working. Since August 13, 2026, the checks start only after at least 500 sends and 25 bounces, up from 50 and 15.

Now run the numbers on a typical cold list. If 8% of 1,000 scraped addresses are dead, the first send produces 80 bounces, well past 5% and past the 25-bounce minimum. Sending is suspended within hours. Spam complaints add a second problem: Google’s sender guidelines ask senders to keep the spam rate under 0.1% and never reach 0.3%, and cold recipients complain far more than subscribers. Our FAQ on why email sending gets suspended covers recovery, and the suspension rules explainer covers the August 2026 change.

Can you use your own SMTP for cold email instead?

GoHighLevel can send through your own provider. HighLevel’s SMTP article (modified April 27, 2026) lists Gmail, Yahoo, SendGrid and “Other” providers such as Mailgun, Amazon SES, Postmark and Zoho. With your own SMTP you lose HighLevel’s bounce classification, spam scoring and postmaster integrations. That moves the problem rather than solving it: SendGrid, Mailgun, SES and Postmark all have their own acceptable use rules, and most prohibit purchased lists. Sending cold from Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 through GoHighLevel puts your main mail domain at risk. Either way, HighLevel’s consent terms still apply.

What setup works for cold outreach and GoHighLevel?

Cold outreach outside GoHighLevel, follow-up inside it A cold email tool sends from a separate outreach domain with its own warmup. When a prospect replies or shows interest, an integration pushes them into a GoHighLevel pipeline. GoHighLevel then handles the conversation, booking, opt-in nurture and the sale, sending from your authenticated main domain. Keep cold sending and its risk on a separate domain and tool; bring people into GoHighLevel once they've engaged.
  1. Send cold campaigns from a dedicated tool such as Instantly or Smartlead, on a separate domain that looks like your brand but isn’t your main one. These tools handle warmup, inbox rotation and list verification.
  2. Verify every list before sending, and remove role addresses and catch-alls you can’t confirm.
  3. Follow CAN-SPAM in every email (see below), and the stricter rules if you email the EU, UK or Canada.
  4. Sync engaged prospects into GoHighLevel. Smartlead and Instantly connect through native integrations, Zapier or Relay. Create the contact and an opportunity in a “Replied” stage, and stop the cold sequence.
  5. Nurture and book inside GoHighLevel from your authenticated main domain, now that the prospect has engaged. The SPF, DKIM and DMARC guide covers that domain setup, and the Zapier vs native integrations guide covers the connection.

What does CAN-SPAM require for cold email?

The FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide covers all commercial email, including business-to-business. Every message must:

  • use accurate From, To, Reply-To and routing information
  • have a subject line that isn’t deceptive
  • identify the message as an advertisement
  • include a valid physical postal address
  • tell recipients how to opt out, and honor opt-outs within 10 business days

Each violating email can cost up to $53,088. Gmail adds its own requirements for anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail addresses: SPF, DKIM and aligned DMARC, one-click unsubscribe, and a spam rate under 0.3%. In the EU and UK, GDPR and e-privacy rules generally require consent for marketing email to individuals, which rules out most purchased lists.

What about cold texts or calls?

Don’t. Texting is stricter than email. The FCC’s guidance on unwanted calls and texts requires prior consent for autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to mobile phones, and prior express written consent for telemarketing. Your A2P 10DLC registration must also describe how contacts opted in, and cold texting is a common reason campaigns are rejected; see the A2P rejection guide. For outbound calling rules, see does GoHighLevel have a power dialer.

FAQs

Can you send cold emails with GoHighLevel?

Technically you can send email to any contact you import, but it is the wrong tool for cold outreach. HighLevel's terms require you to hold all legally required consent before contacting anyone, and LC Email suspends sending at a 5% bounce rate. Cold lists also generate spam complaints that hurt the sending domain. Use a dedicated cold email tool and bring interested replies into GoHighLevel.

Can I upload a purchased email list to GoHighLevel?

You can import contacts, but mailing a purchased list from GoHighLevel puts the account at risk. Purchased lists tend to have high bounce rates and no consent, which triggers LC Email's bounce suspension and breaches HighLevel's consent terms. In the EU and UK, a purchased list rarely gives you a lawful basis to email at all.

What bounce rate gets LC Email suspended?

HighLevel's bounce suspension article, modified September 17, 2026, says a 3% bounce rate triggers a warning, 5% suspends sending for 12 hours, a second 5% triggers another 12-hour block, and a third leads to permanent suspension until Support intervenes. Since August 13, 2026, the checks start after at least 500 sends and 25 bounces.

Is cold emailing legal?

In the US, CAN-SPAM allows commercial email without prior consent if you follow its rules: accurate headers, non-deceptive subject lines, identification as an ad, a valid physical postal address, a working opt-out honored within 10 business days. Penalties reach $53,088 per email. The EU, UK and Canada are stricter and generally require consent or a narrow legitimate-interest basis. Get legal advice for your market.

Can I use Instantly or Smartlead with GoHighLevel?

Yes, through native integrations, Zapier or tools such as Relay. The usual setup sends cold campaigns from the dedicated tool on a separate domain, then pushes contacts who reply or show interest into a GoHighLevel pipeline and workflow.

Can I use my own SMTP to send cold email from GoHighLevel?

GoHighLevel supports Gmail, Yahoo, SendGrid and other SMTP providers such as Mailgun, Amazon SES, Postmark and Zoho. HighLevel notes that with your own SMTP you lose its bounce classification, spam scoring and postmaster integrations. Your SMTP provider's own policies on cold and purchased lists still apply, and most prohibit them.

Can I send cold text messages from GoHighLevel?

No. Texting is stricter than email. The FCC requires prior consent for autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to mobile numbers, and prior express written consent for telemarketing texts. A2P 10DLC registration also requires you to show how contacts opted in. Cold SMS risks carrier blocking, A2P rejection and TCPA claims.

How do I warm up a domain for GoHighLevel?

For opt-in email from GoHighLevel, use a dedicated sending subdomain, authenticate it with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, start with your most engaged contacts and raise volume gradually while watching bounces and complaints. We found no built-in warmup tool in HighLevel's documentation; cold email tools include their own warmup.
