Is HubSpot Free or Starter Better?

Quick answer

Free is better until you hit one of its caps: 2 users, 1,000 contacts, 2,000 email sends a month, HubSpot branding and a single automated action. Starter removes branding, lifts those caps and adds 50 workflows and 15 pipelines, at $7 to $20 per seat per month. Neither has sequences.

Key takeaways

  • Free is $0 for up to 2 users, with no time limit, 1,000 contacts, 2,000 email sends a month with HubSpot branding, 1 automated email action, 10 dashboards and 3 email templates (HubSpot pricing pages, checked Oct 22, 2026).
  • Starter is priced per seat at $7 with $20 shown beside it, and the product catalog lists a Starter seat at $20. For 5 users that is $420 to $1,200 a year.
  • Starter lifts the caps that block growth: more than 2 users, branding removed, up to 10,000 email templates, 50 workflows with restricted triggers, 15 pipelines, 30 dashboards, 50 active CRM segments and 5 times your marketing contact tier in monthly email sends.
  • Neither plan has sequences, forecasting, calculated properties or custom objects. If those are the reason you are looking, the real comparison is Free against Professional, not Free against Starter.
  • The pricing page advertises up to 65% off Starter for new customers for a limited time, and its extracted text does not show which price that applies to, so confirm the cart total.

HubSpot Free is better until you hit one of its caps: 2 users, 1,000 contacts, 2,000 email sends a month, HubSpot branding and a single automated email action. Starter lifts those caps and removes branding on several tools, for $7 to $20 per seat per month. Neither plan includes sequences or forecasting, so the choice is about growth, not features.

This page compares the two from HubSpot’s own pricing pages and product catalog, read on October 22, 2026, and shows the cost of Starter for 3 to 10 users. The full limits sheet for Starter is in what are the limits of HubSpot Starter.

The two Starter pages disagree on email automation (1 action vs up to 10).

What does HubSpot Starter cost for 3, 5 and 10 users?

Starter is priced per seat, and the pages show two prices, so the table gives both.

Users Free Starter at $7 a year Starter at $20 a year
2 $0 $168 $480
3 Not possible on Free tools $252 $720
5 Not possible $420 $1,200
10 Not possible $840 $2,400

Excludes extra credits, add-ons and tax. View-only seats are free on every edition per the catalog, so count only people who edit records.

Yearly cost of Starter for 5 users

Starter at $20 per seat
$1,200
Starter at $7 per seat
$420
Free tools (limit 2 users)

Seat price x 5 users x 12 months, from hubspot.com/pricing/crm and the HubSpot Product and Services Catalog, checked Oct 22, 2026. Free supports 2 users, so five users cannot run on it. The page also advertises up to 65% off Starter for new customers for a limited time.

The $7 and $20 pair is the main pricing trap. The page lists $7 with $20 struck through, and the catalog lists a Core Seat at $20. If a budget cannot move, use $20 and treat $7 as a saving you confirm in the cart. Our HubSpot pricing and limits page goes through the same pair for Professional, and the HubSpot pricing calculator totals it for your team.

When should you move from HubSpot Free to Starter?

Move when a documented cap blocks real work, not before.

Trigger Why Free stops working What Starter changes
A third person needs to edit records Free is for up to 2 users Paid seats, view-only seats stay free
You pass 1,000 contacts Free lists 1,000 contacts Paid accounts list 15 million total
You send more than 2,000 marketing emails a month Flat Free limit 5 times your marketing contact tier
Clients see HubSpot branding on meeting links, chat or pages Free carries branding Branding removed on those tools
You need more than 1 automated email action Free lists 1 Up to 10 on the Customer Platform page
You want 5 or more reusable email templates Free lists 3 Up to 10,000
You run more than 10 active segments Free lists 10 Up to 50

Source: hubspot.com/pricing/crm and hubspot.com/pricing/sales, checked Oct 22, 2026. The rows with no trigger on your side mean you can stay on Free.

If none of these rows describes you, staying on Free is the right call and costs nothing. Free tools have no time limit.

What do neither Free nor Starter give you?

Four things people expect are not in either plan. HubSpot’s knowledge base lists sequences under Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional and Enterprise only, with a Sales or Service seat. Calculated properties and association labels are marked not available on Starter and available on Professional and Enterprise, and custom objects are Enterprise only. Forecasting and phone support are listed from Professional. If sequences or forecasting drive the decision, you are comparing Free with Professional, not Starter, and Professional starts at $90 per seat on the pricing page before onboarding. Compare that with flat or lower-priced options in HubSpot vs Pipedrive and does Pipedrive have a free plan.

Does HubSpot Free have a time limit or hidden costs?

No time limit is stated: the pricing page says you can add 1,000 contacts and your free access has no time limit, with no credit card required for up to 2 users. The costs appear when you cross a cap. Starter includes 500 HubSpot Credits a month that do not roll over, and extra credits cost $0.010 each, according to the catalog. Marketing contacts above the included tier also cost extra, though the pages we read do not list that price for Starter.

When to get help

Choosing between Free and Starter is a spreadsheet exercise. Get help when you are moving from a spreadsheet or another CRM into HubSpot, when you need automation beyond the 50-workflow cap, or when you are weighing whether to skip Starter and buy Professional. aibrevo implements HubSpot and seven other CRMs and quotes per project. You can book a short call or send a message, and the HubSpot service page describes the work. If you are still choosing a platform, how to choose a CRM is the neutral starting point.

FAQs

Is HubSpot Free or Starter better?

Free is better while you are one or two people with up to 1,000 contacts and simple needs. Starter is better once you need a third user, no HubSpot branding, more than 2,000 email sends a month, more than one automated action or more pipelines. Starter costs $7 to $20 per seat per month and still lacks sequences and forecasting.

Is HubSpot really free forever?

HubSpot's pricing page says you can add 1,000 contacts and your free access has no time limit, for up to 2 users and with no credit card required. The limits are caps, not a trial. Branding stays on emails, forms, chat and meeting links, and you cannot add a third user without paying.

What does HubSpot Starter add over Free?

More seats, higher usage caps and fewer branding marks. Starter lists up to 10,000 email templates against 3, 5,000 snippets against 3, 1,000 meeting links against 1, 30 dashboards against 10, up to 50 workflows, 15 pipelines, 50 active CRM segments against 10, 500 HubSpot Credits and email support. Branding is removed on meeting links, live chat and landing pages.

How much does HubSpot Starter cost for a small team?

The pages show $7 per seat per month with $20 beside it, and the catalog lists a Starter seat at $20. That is $252 to $720 a year for 3 users and $420 to $1,200 for 5. Free covers only 2 users, so a third person is the usual reason to start paying. Confirm the cart total.

Can I stay on HubSpot Free with 3 users?

Not on Free tools alone. HubSpot states Free is for up to 2 users. A third person needs a paid seat, which means a Starter seat or higher on the hub they use. View-only seats are available at no additional cost per the product catalog, so someone who only reads records does not need a paid seat.

Does HubSpot Starter remove the HubSpot branding?

On several tools, yes. The pricing pages list branding removed on meeting links, live chat, landing pages, website pages and the blog on Starter, where Free shows it. We did not find every branded element mapped for every tool, so check forms and emails in a trial account before you assume it is all gone.

Do I get workflows on HubSpot Starter?

The pricing page says up to 50 workflows with restricted triggers and actions on Starter, and Free lists none. HubSpot's help article on creating workflows lists only Professional and Enterprise, so the pages disagree. Free tools list 1 automated action in email marketing, and Starter's Customer Platform lists up to 10.

What does neither HubSpot Free nor Starter include?

Sequences, forecasting, calculated properties, association labels and phone support are Professional features, and custom objects are Enterprise. Sequences need a Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional or Enterprise subscription with a Sales or Service seat. If one of these is the goal, skip Starter and price Professional.

Is HubSpot Starter worth it for one person?

Usually only if a specific cap or branding mark is costing you. A single user stays inside Free's 2-user limit, and Free covers 1,000 contacts. Starter at $7 to $20 a month makes sense if you send more than 2,000 emails a month, run more than one automation or need branding removed. Otherwise, stay on Free.

Is there a free trial for HubSpot Starter?

The Starter page we read does not mention a free trial. It shows a banner offering up to 65% off Starter for new customers, with select offers available for a limited time. Free tools never expire, so the practical trial is to use Free first and upgrade when you hit a cap. Confirm any offer at checkout.
